I recently completed a month-long, online writing class at Writer U. (WriterUniv.com http://www.writeruniv.com/)
The course was plotting through motivation and was a combination of online lectures, discussion, and homework. Every student was asked to think of a brand new story premise with a brand new character and then explore that character's motivation. After that, we explored the antagonist's motivation. In the end, we put it all together into a plot outline. I used an idea I had come up with a few years ago, but couldn't get past the idea. This course really helped, not only with this particular premise, but with some ideas on how to proceed with any story. It was my first online class and I was very please with how it went. Have any of you tried an online course? If so, what was your experience?
I'm taking Discovering Your Niche a 10 week class from Writers on the Net. Instructor Gloria Kempton focuses on forms of magazine articles: personal story, how-to, personal essay, humor, other person's, fiction, etc.
